Ras Baraka defeated Shavar Jeffries in the race to be Newark's next mayor.  Baraka secured 54 percent of the vote.

"Watch out America!  Here comes Newark!" proclaimed Baraka after his victory last night.

Baraka is a city councilman and a frequent critic of former Mayor Cory Booker.  Booker resigned as mayor last year after being elected to the U.S. Senate.  Luis Quintana has been serving as mayor since, but did not run in this election.

Baraka used the slogan, "We are the mayor."

"We have to be the mayor that saves our city," Baraka said.

The election came after a bitter campaign and a TV ad blitz in recent weeks.
