A 43 year old Staten Island man has died, after police officers tried to arrest him yesterday afternoon.

The Daily News reports that video of the incident shows cops putting Eric Garner in a chokehold.

“I can’t breathe!  I can’t breathe!” Garner is heard yelling on the video.

Moments later, he seemed to lose consciousness and was pronounced dead at Richmond University Medical Center.

An NYPD spokesman said Garner “was being placed in custody, went into cardiac arrest and died.”

Two plainclothes officers approached Garner on Bay Street and Victory Boulevard and began questioning him about selling untaxed cigarettes.  When uniformed officers tried to arrest Garner, the video shows him refusing to put his hands behind his back.

NYPD Internal Affairs has launched an investigation.
