Doja Cat Makes VMA History, Pulls Double Duty Hosting and Performing

After a whirlwind year and a half that saw Doja Cat catapult from pop heatseeker to mainstream icon, she's about to make history at this year's VMA ceremony.

She's taking on hosting duties for the show along with delivering a sure-to-impress performance. But that's not the thing that's making history.

She's the first ever host to also be nominated for Video of the Year, but the milestone almost didn't happen. Doja told People that when she got the call to take on hosting, her immediate reaction was "No, there's no way. I'm not doing this. I'm too tired."

Doja said that MTV was super understanding and were willing to make whatever adjustments were needed to have her take on the gig.

In addition to her Video of the Year nomination for "Kiss Me More" ft. Sza, she's also nominated for

  • Best Collaboration - "Kiss Me More" ft. Sza
  • Best Visual Effects - "You Right" ft. The Weeknd
  • Best Art Direction - "Best Friend" by Saweetie
  • Artist of the Year

The 2021 MTV VMAs air this Sunday, September 12 at 8pm.
