Kate Hudson‘s new movie, the Zac Braff-written and directed Wish I Was Here is one of the first feature films to be crowd-funded via Kickstarter.

And when the actress called in to On Air with Ryan Seacrest on Tuesday morning, she explained what it was like to be a part of the project.

“Zach chose to try a new concept and he was very successful at that and he got to make the movie he wanted,” says Kate.

As for the plot, about a guy (played by Braff) who is at a crossroads in his life, Kate adds that it really resonated with her.

“For me it was really relatable … complicated relationships with parental figures and being at a point in your life when you’re in your 30s and you’e looking at everything and it’s time to step up and grow up .. infused with lots of good humor and Zach’s style and esthetic. I thought what a wonderful thing to be a part of.”

Wish I Was Here is in select theaters now and nationwide this Friday!
