The NYPD says that reports of coyote sightings are coming in much more frequently in multiple locations throughout the park.
In 2019, there were multiple reports of coyote sightings near Belvedere Castle in Central Park.
According to the NYPD, there have been “weekly sightings of coyotes in Central Park, different locations including Belvedere Castle.”
The NYPD is urging people to take the appropriate measures if they come across a coyote while in Central Park, and to be particularly careful while walking their pets in the park. The NYPD suggests following these tips if you encounter a coyote: don’t run, make a loud noise and wave your arms around.

- Do Not Feed The Coyotes.
- Remove Attractants. Place all food/dog food in animal proof containers.
- Supervise Pets. Make sure to walk all pets on a leash while in the park.
- Keep Coyotes Wary. Act big and make loud noises.
- Appreciate The Coyotes (From a Distance) — at least 150 feet away from them.
The NYC Parks website also urges people to not panic if they see a coyote, as most are not dangerous to people.
