Natalie Portman will be handed down the hammer in Marvel's Thor: Love And Thunder.

Portman, who played Jane Foster in the first two Thor movies, will return to the franchise to portray the female Thor in the fourth Thor installment, the film's director, Taika Waititi, confirmed Saturday (July 20). The Portman starrer, slated to open in theaters on November 5, 2021, was announced during San Diego Comic-Con, where other Phase 4 projects for the Marvel Cinematic Universe were unveiled.

Joining co-stars Chris Hemworth (Thor) and Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie) on stage as the audience erupted with applause, Portman was given a Hasbro replica of the mystic hammer just for the occasion, which she proudly accepted. “I’ve always had hammer envy,” she admitted to the crowd.

In the first two films, released in 2011 and 2013, the 38-year-old actress played Hemsworth’s love interest. Although noticeably absent in Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok in 2017, the latest of the installments, Portman did make a few (albeit brief) flashback appearances in this year’s Avengers: Endgame.

According to Deadline, Waititi is considering basing the fourthquel’s storyline on a 2015 comic narrative written by Jason Aron titled, The Mighty Thor. While neither Hemsworth nor Portman have seen the script yet, Waititi promises, “That story line is incredible is full emotion, love and thunder and introduces for the first time female Thor.”

Here's the synopsis, per Marvel: “When Dr. Jane Foster lifts the mystic hammer Mjolnir, she is transformed into the Goddess of Thunder, The Mighty Thor! Her enemies are many, as Asgard descends further into chaos and war threatens to spread throughout the Ten Realms. Yet her greatest battle will be against a far more personal foe: the cancer that is killing her mortal form.”
