TikTok Users Are Pointing Out Jennifer Aniston’s 'Vocal Tic' On 'Friends'

A number of TikTok users binge-watching Friends for the first time have noticed an interesting aspect of Jennifer Aniston's portrayal of Rachel Green. Aniston tends to clear her throat before delivering lines, especially before delivering a punchline.

'What I'm about to say is going to ruin your life especially if you are a big fan of the show Friends," one TikTok user said in a now-viral video. "If you're a big fan of that show, I'm begging you, scroll away because I'm going to ruin your life."

"Jennifer Aniston has this sort of vocal tic that she does at the beginning of every single sentence that she starts on any show that she's in. It's very specific and it's very hard to unsee once you notice it," he continued before cutting to a series of clips from Friends show the actress repeatedly clearing her throat in a number of different scenes and episodes.

While a younger generation may be discovering Friendsand Aniston's throat clearing—for the first time, this isn't news for many fans of the beloved sitcom. Back in 2019, a fan compiled a supercut of Aniston's signature line delivery.

Some fans, though, believe Aniston was making a conscious choice for her character the whole time. "She clears her throat when her character is uncomfortable with what she is saying (because it's a lie, or awkward, etc). This is what acting is about," one fan theorized. "The vast majority of lines are delivered without that little cough, precisely because most of the time Rachel is happy with what she is saying."
