A storm front will bring severe weather back to the Tri-State area Thursday, with damaging winds, lightning and chances for flash flooding, hail and isolated tornadoes.

Rain showers and thunderstorms are likely to roll through the area in the afternoon and pick up intensity in the evening.

The most severe weather is expected south and west of New York City, though the Big Apple will likely see heavy rain and high winds, according to NBC 4 New York.

Parts of Long Island and Connecticut could also see strong storms.

While the oncoming storms present many hazards, the rain should help clear out the wildfire smoke that's been hovering over the city, prompting air quality alerts in recent days.

More than 60 wildfires are currently burning in western states and Canada. Building smoke has been wrapped into weather systems and blown east across the continent. The conditions were so significant last week that skies throughout the area were colored with an opaque yellow fog.

As skies clear Friday, more comfortable, fall-like conditions should arrive with below average temperatures around 80 degrees.
