Heat Emergency Declared In New York City

Dangerous heat moves into New York City and the Tri-state area on Friday and will last through the weekend.

Temperatures will be in the 90s on Friday with a heat index that’s closer to 100. It really heats up on Saturday with temperatures close to 100 and a heat index of 105, before another day in the 90s on Sunday.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has signed an executive order to declare a state of emergency. That requires many office buildings to set their thermostats to 78 degrees.

“The City government is limiting its energy use to reduce strain on the electrical grid, and now private office buildings will also have to do their part,” Mayor de Blasio said in a statement.

Sunday’s triathlon has been canceled for the first time in its history and racing has been canceled on Saturday at Saratoga.

Con Edison said it’s bringing in extra crews to try and keep the power on for the city. The utility is also asking people to help them by conserving energy.

Cooling centers will be open around New York City. The hours at public pools are also being extended.
