On Katie’s Crib, Scandal star and mom of two Katie Lowes sits down with moms from all walks of life to hear their real-deal pregnancy stories, getting into everything from postpartum depression to “mom brain” to that first terrifying bowel movement after a natural birth. To kick off her fourth season, she interviews her fellow Waitress cast member, actress and singer Katharine McPhee-Foster, who just welcomed her first child into the world. Kat, overall, was incredibly lucky with her birth story; she’s always wanted to be a mom, her pregnancy and labor were relatively breezy, and her son is a healthy big baby she’s obviously super in love with. But sometimes, the easy birth stories are the most important to share, as Katie points out: There are so many stories of complications, but “it’s also an option for everything to go fine!”
They aren’t shy about the realities of pregnancy, sharing their hours of laboring on the toilet, treatments for infections, and of course the pain and mess of it all, while also laughing about their husbands’ behavior in the delivery room (“I look over and he’s full on eating a cheeseburger”), and all the absurd moments (and fluids) that can happen when you’re trying to push a baby out of your body. But that’s the point of the podcast – an unflinching look at the whole shebang, to better illustrate the trials and triumphs of motherhood and help other women feel less alone. From the name to the nursery to the two a.m. feedings, no stone is unturned – or unflinchingly looked at.
Kat shares why she and her husband, Grammy-winning producer David Foster, chose the name Renny Foster at the hospital, and what it was like being home for a few months trying to adjust to her new life as a mom. Katie is also very frank that it took her awhile to fall in love with her children, calling it a “slow burn,” while Kat says she was immediately “madly in love.” Katie says she felt guilty for not having that “lightning strike” the moment she looked into her baby’s eyes, but for some women it does take time, because of the hormones, the “post-baby blues,” and all the other chaos happening in your body and mind during such an important transformation. If you’re a mom, a soon-to-be mom, or a wannabe mom, this podcast will give you all the support you need with refreshing candor. Find out more about Kat’s birth story, including her one tried-and-true tip for new moms that makes Katie gasp with delight, on this episode of Katie’s Crib.
