On this episode of I Am All In, Scott Patterson and his producers Amy and Danielle are talking about season one, episode three of Gilmore Girls, “Kill Me Now.” They comment on the importance of Rory Gilmore’s relationship with her grandfather, how Emily Gilmore is a “puppet master,” and how great Lorelai Gilmore is at her job, plus how essential the wackier storylines are to make the drama hit a little harder. Then he chats with key costumer Valerie Campbell, who was in charge of making sure all the actors’ costumes were good to go; she shares some great on-set memories, including a missing hat and a medical emergency. Finally, Scott answers some fan questions from Amber in New York about why he chose to make Luke so grumpy, and how great it was working with “living legend” Ed Herrmann.
Scott is a screenwriter as well as an actor, and that really comes through as he dissects the show; he talks character development and scene structure as well as psychoanalyzing Rory and Lorelai’s relationship (“If you’re that close, is it choking Rory?”); but they also share a lot of laughs over the blueberry/strawberry feud and the twins marrying twins plotline. The powerhouse fight between Lorelai and Emily (about their boobs, and other things) is an important character moment for both, but Richard Gilmore really has the most growing to do: “He’s going to have to admit to himself at some point….maybe Lorelai isn’t such a screw up,” Scott says – because Rory has turned out so great, she “must have done something right.” And he admits that he’s “becoming increasingly obsessed” with the show now that he’s finally watching it for the first time.
Valerie shares great stories about the producers having to break into one of the actor’s apartments because he forgot to show up to work, and how during one shoot a golf ball caused a medical emergency; plus the time one of Luke’s hats went missing and she had to get ten more made with a special fabric. Then Amber calls in to ask if the script called for Luke to be kind of a grump or if that was Scott’s choice. Scott says it was all him: “There were so many very light, perky, happy, sunny characters in it that I thought, ‘Boy, this needs an anchor….or else the whole show is going to float away,’” he tells her. He thought playing the “normal small-town guy” would be boring, “and it worked out, to my amazement!” Hear all this and more on this episode of I Am All In.
