Dodgers Win World Series With Game 5 Comeback Over Yankees

The Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series Wednesday with a 7 - 6 victory over the New York Yankees in Game 5 of the Fall Classic.

The Yankees looked like they were going to send the series back to Los Angeles after bashing their way to a 5 - 0 lead early Wednesday night, but the proverbial wheels came off the bus in the fifth inning when the Yankees made three costly errors.

Kiké Hernandez led off the frame by snapping Yankees ace Gerrit Cole’s no-hitter with a single. Tommy Edman then hit a fly ball to centerfield which Aaron Judge dropped, putting two runners on base with no one out.

Will Smith then grounded to shortstop Anthony Volpe, who bounced a throw to third base, loading the bases for the Dodgers with no one out.

Cole struck out Gavin Lux and Shohei Ohtani, but when Mookie Betts hit a ground ball to first baseman Anthony Rizzo, Cole did not cover the base, allowing a run to score.

With the Dodgers finally having broken the seal, New York’s longtime baseball menace Freddie Freeman plated two more runs with an RBI single.

Teoscar Hernández followed with a two-run double, and tied the game.

The Yankees rebounded in the fifth, taking a 5 - 6 lead on a sacrifice fly from Giancarlo Stanton.

But the Dodgers took back control in the eighth inning, taking advantage of some heavily worked Yankees relievers.

Kiké Hernandez and Edman started the inning with a pair of singles off Tommy Kahnle. Will Smith then walked to load the bases for the Dodgers, again, with no one out.

Lux tied the game 6 - 6 with a sacrifice fly and Shotei Ohtani loaded the bases again after a catcher’s interference call.

Betts put the Dodgers in front for good with another sacrifice fly, making it 7 - 5.

The Dodgers turned to star reliever Blake Trienen for three more outs in the bottom of the eighth for a total of 2.1 innings of work.

In the ninth, the Dodgers turned to Game 3 starter Walker Buehler for the final three outs, sealing the championship for Los Angeles. Freeman was named World Series MVP.

Freeman, a longtime nemesis of the crosstown New York Mets from his time with the Atlanta Braves, set a major league record for most consecutive World Series games with a home run. His streak of 6 games stretched back to the final two games of the 2021 World Series with the Braves and the first four games of this series versus the Yankees.

Though Freeman did not homer in Game 5, he still managed to drive in 2 runs in the clinching game, giving him 12 RBI across the five games, tying a World Series record dating back to 1960.
