James Arthur Explains Why His Success Is So Surprising

James Arthur stopped by to catch up with Shelley Rome. It's only been a few months since the British singer-songwriter visited Z100, but a lot has changed since his last interview. His hit song 'Say You Won't Let Go' has blown up into an undeniable global sensation, yet Arthur is as humble and gracious as ever. Despite the fact that he's playing his song on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Arthur is still having a hard time believing his amazing success.

"It's happened so quickly," Arthur said of the success of 'Say You Won't Let Go', "I've been here to do promo once and [the song] was just sort of rumbling. Then I went home and in the space of two months it just catapulted. I don't know what happened." While the 29-year-old musician is surprised by his own good fortune, Shelley points out that it's truly an "undeniable" song. As his breakout hit grows more and more popular, especially in the United States, Arthur is being recognized on an increasingly regular basis. "It's always going to be an odd feeling for somebody to tap you on the shoulder and be like 'are you that guy?'" he said of the experience. "All I can do is be humbled by it."

Besides his newfound stardom, Arthur is still a regular guy in a lot of ways. One way is that he loves Ariana Grande and Adele just as much as everybody else. He's even remixed Ariana Grande's song 'Into You' with R. Kelly's 'Ignition,' which is pretty epic. Arthur compared Grande to Mariah Carey, pointing out how hugely talented both ladies are. Adele, who is also undoubtedly extraordinarily talented, draws Arthur by how open and real she is with her fans.

James Arthur's latest single 'Can I Be Him' is out now. Make sure you check out his awesome new track.
