Kat Graham sat down with Shelley Rome to talk about her new music, as well as what it was like to play one of her icon's on film. Graham had the honor of portraying Jada Pinkett Smith in All Eyez On Me, which follows the life and death of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur. For those of you who don't know, Pinkett Smith and Tupac were extremely close friends before his tragic death in 1996. For Graham, it was the role of a lifetime.
There's been some controversy surrounding the biopic, though, due to a slew of bad reviews from critics and fans alike. One of the people who disapproves of the film is Pinkett Smith. During her interview with Shelley, Graham spoke about Pinkett Smith's involvement in the film's production. "She wasn't [involved]. I spoke to her after I finished the movie and I told her what I did and what scenes we shot...anything she needed to know." Graham explained. "It was just a really beautiful conversation."
While Graham notes that Pinkett Smith wasn't involved in the film's production, it seems that the actress did have the support of her character's real life inspiration. It's definitely unfortunate that Pinkett Smith didn't love the finished product, but playing somebody she looked up was a great experience for Graham. "This is somebody that I've looked up to for a really long time," Graham said of Pinkett Smith. "When you think of black women in the industry and you think of these actress-producers, there's kind of a handful. You have this very select few that are still doing it, which is a little nerve-wracking because it's not like you're playing somebody who's never going to see the movie."
While Pinkett Smith spoke out against the film, she made sure to note she didn't hold anything against Graham. Her performance truly was a great piece of action, even if Pinkett Smith didn't like the way the scenes were written. What do you think -did you enjoy All Eyez On Me? Let us know!
