A drawing by one of the greatest German artists of the 16th century that was purchased at a yard sale for $30 is believed to be worth more than $10-million. In 2019, art collector Clifford Schorer was on his way to a party and realized he’d forgotten to pick up a gift for the host, so he stopped by a vintage bookstore on the way. The store owner mentioned that his friend had a drawing by the famous renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer, and asked if Schorer would take a look at it.
Even though Schorer wasn’t hopeful that the artwork would be very impressive, he went to see it anyway. But when he examined the work, he could hardly believe how good it was. He told the owner, "I think it's either the greatest forgery I've ever seen or a masterpiece." The drawing is believed to have been completed in 1503 and was purchased at a yard sale in 2017 at the home of an architect who’d been gifted the piece from his father, who was an art dealer.
Schorer spent the next three years verifying the artwork’s authenticity, consulting experts around the world and comparing it to similar Dürer drawings. Considering what other old master drawings from other Renaissance artists have sold for in the past, he believes the artwork could sell for more than $10-million at auction.
