Typical workplace email sign-offs are usually formal and follow the likes of “best wishes”, “kind regards”, “sincerely” and “thanks”. Gen Z employees on TikTok are showing how they and their Gen Z co-workers sign-off on their emails — and there are no “kind regards” or “all the best” insight.
- “hasta la pasta”
- “Talk soon loser”
- “Apologies for existing”
- “insert pleasantry here”
- “seeyas later”
- “That’s all”
- “That’s about it. Ummm… yeah.”
- “Ok then”
- “I’m out”
- “hehe bye”
Brittney Cooper a professor at Rutgers University asked on Twitter: “Why don’t modern college kids know how to send a formal letter/email? I thought everyone knew to begin Dear Prof. X or Dear Dr. X. Instead these kids stay emailing me Hello There! Or Hello (no name): Why are they like this?” she said.
- Gen Z’s response? “Dear” just sounds “too formal.”
- Others also thought that beginning an email with “hello” was considered formal.
