For most, March turned out to be the month of breakups, according to the viral “March theory," which in turn cost single people thousands of dollars.

According to our experts the average cost of a breakup for Gen Z is $3,862. This cost was determined by tallying up expenses such as housing, travel, dating, and post-breakup spending.

Seeking out some retail therapy, having maybe one too many nights out, and engaging in other extreme behavior while heartbroken all contributed to the shock factor of post-breakup expenses. Our experts also say a good number of Gen Zers who wanted to quickly move on from their breakup were willing to spend, on average $131 on a date.

Sometimes the best post-breakup medicine is saying simply saying YOLO and booking a week-long trip to have a nice change of scenery. Of those who chose this route, most admitted to spending $1,991 on this type of vacation.

If you decided to take the gym rat approach to your breakup you're not alone as some even decided to go the more affordable route by taking a workout class or getting a haircut, which could cost up to around $100.

In addition to the impulsive spending newly single people will often do, taking on the monthly expense of rent as a solo person can also do some serious damage to a person's pockets... I mean it's no secret couples move in together to save money on rent, so taking on that hassle alone can do some serious damage!

Breaking up isn’t just an emotional upheaval: it’s a financial reset so it's important to stay mindful of these financial obstacles you may experience
